Nikkei: both Nikon and Canon to announce new full-frame mirrorless cameras in the second half of 2018

According to a recent Nikkei article , both Nikon and Canon are going to release their full-frame mirrorless cameras in the second half of 2018. The initial plan was to release their new mirrorless solutions in 2019, but both companies have accelerated their plans based on the latest market trends, demand and advance in technology.

Sony executive predicts that Nikon will release a new full-frame mirrorless camera in the next 12 months

I am not sure if anyone will be surprised by this statement, but Dpreview reports that during their interview with Sony at the CP+, Kenji Tanaka (Sony Senior General Manager of the Digital Imaging Business Group) shared his personal opinion that Nikon will announce a new full-frame mirrorless camera in the next 12 months: “This is just my personal opinion, but I think that maybe by next year’s CP+ you’ll see full-frame mirrorless cameras from Canon and Nikon.

TowerJazz working on a new full frame sensors with global shutter

Since the Nikon D850 was announced, some speculation started here in the comment section of the [NR] blog that the D850 sensor was manufactured by the Israeli company TowerJazz. In November last year  the CEO of TowerJazz said that ” In the digital SLR market we engage with one of the leaders in the world in the development of their next-generation sensors .” At one point Panasonic was considering to unload their shares of TowerJazz. TowerJazz Semiconductor recently released some additional details on their foundry’s image sensor business – they are working on a new full frame sensors with global shutter (cough-cough-nikon-mirrorless): “For CMOS image sensor we use the 300 millimeter 65 nanometer capability to develop unique high dynamic range and extremely high sensitivity pixels with very low dark current for the high-end digital SLR and cinematography and broadcasting markets
