Nikon has a new patent ( 2018-60041 ) for a zoom eyepiece for EVF. The full title is ” Eyepiece Optical system, optical instrument and manufacturing method of eyepiece optical system “.

This new Nikon design patent ( USD789434 ) could be for the rumored Nikon Coolpix P900 replacement . The top dials are different when compared to the current Nikon P900 model

The latest Nikon patents: 400mm, 500mm and 600mm f/5.6 Phase Fresnel (PF) lenses

Nikon 400mm f/5.6 lens patent Nikon 500mm f/5.6 lens patent Nikon 600mm f/5.6 lens patent Nikon filed a patent  ( P2018-17857A ) in Japan for a 400mm f/5.6 (22cm long),  500mm f/5.6 (28cm long) and 600mm f/5.6 (33cm long) full frame Phase Fresnel (PF) lenses. The latest Nikon patents: mirrorless lenses, curved sensor and more

Nikon’s patent US20170261728  contains calculations for various mirrorless f/2.8-4 lenses designed for various sensor sizes (FX, DX, 2x crop factor and 1″): Nikon FX mirrorless lenses: 24-85mm f/2.8-4 24-105mm f/2.8-4 24-70mm f/2.8-4 Nikon DX mirrorless lenses: 16-60mm f/2.8-4 16-70mm f/2.8-4 16-50mm f/2.8-4 18-55mm f/2.8-4 Lenses for 2x crop factor: 12-40mm f/2.8-4 Lenses for 1″ sensor: 9-35mm f/2.8-4 Among all these patents there is also a patent for a full frame 24-85mm f/2.8-4 DSLR lens. Next is another Nikon patent for a curved sensor and a matching 50mm f/2.8 lens ( P2017-53887A ): The new Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 28mm f/1.4E ED lens was designed together with or by Konica Minolta ( P2017-227799A ): Another Nikon patent ( P2017-216578A ) describes a special arrangement to improve the phase-detection ability for the on-sensor PDAF: Nikon has a patent ( US9774777 ) for a mirrorless camera but it’s filed in 2016 so it is not clear if this is for their new mirrorless model or for the Nikon 1. Nikon has a design patent for a new Coolpix superzoom camera

Nikon has a new design patent (date of patent: August 29th, 2017) for a Coolpix superzoom camera. This could be the rumored replacement of the P900 or a new version of the B500/B700 models

Patents are no guarantee for future products, but I think everything so far  points to a new full frame mirrorless camera with a new mount that can accommodate a 50mm f/0.9 lens. Catching up on the latest Nikon patents (more mirrorless hints)

I have not reported on the latest Nikon patents in a while, here is a quick recap (a reminder:  as some have found out recently , previous patents are not a guarantee for future products): Nikon has a patent application ( direct link ) for a multi-accessory port which has a noise-resistant pin and can be used for attaching an EVF to a mirrorless camera ( see also this related patent) . New Nikon multi-pixel PDAF sensor patent

A new Nikon patent  P2017-135422A  was recently published in Japan for a multi-pixel PDAF sensor. The patent as originally filed in 2012 and my understanding is that it was just recently approved. The latest Nikon lens patents (incl. 35mm f/2 full frame lens designed for a curved sensor)

It is time for another recap of the latest Nikon lens patents I have been collecting over the past few months: The first patent ( P2017-125904A ) that was published today is the most interesting – it’s for a 35mm f/2 full frame lens designed for a curved sensor. Please note that the patent does not provide sufficient technical information to determine if this is a mirrorless or a DSLR lens ( Nikon had other curved sensor patents in the past ).
